Our goal is to promote TU's conservation mission, recruit new members, and conduct a raffle fund raiser. The Sportsman Show was a great success - Our volunteers did a great job promoting TU's conservation mission. They spoke to hundreds of visitors and handed out nearly 600 TU Magazines and over 400 new member applications. Fourteen new members signed up at the show. We didn't make much money but we didn't loose any either. A final financial report will be provided once we have all the figures in. I would like to offer a special thanks to the following members for volunteering their time to man our booth: John & Pat Gallagher, Ray Labuda, Suzanne Faeber, Jan & Lee Seabeck, Wes Perusek, Charles Frawley, Kathy & Mark Ulicki, Carl Kocian, Craig Strachan, Guy Jardine, Tony Evangelista, Scott Dennis, Tom Korn, Keith Brewster, and Steve Zayac.

Tuesday, October 14, 2004As has been the custom over the past several years, our first Chapter meeting of the 2003-2004 season will be held at Pine Lake Trout Club. In place of a speaker, members are invited to signup for an afternoon of fishing at the club followed by a dinner and a membership meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting. Tuesday, May 18th, 2004May will feature a special presentation called Alaska On Your Own by Jeff Schmitt. Probably no place in North America lives in the dreams of those of us who fish more than Alaska. The fish, the wildlife, the remoteness and the adventure make Alaska the ultimate fishing destination. However, Alaska can be one of the most expensive places in the world to fish.....at least if you do it using the standard guided flyfishing lodge. Many anglers spend $5,000 to $10,000 per week to fish the great rivers of Alaska, making the experience unreachable to all but the very wealthy. That is unless you're willing to do a little planning, sleep in a tent, cook your own meals and experience "Alaska On Your Own." Jeff and Cyndie Schmitt were a two career couple from Austin Texas when, in 1995, they quit their jobs, rented their house, moved into an RV and set out to see the great rivers of the Western US, Canada and Alaska. During their 5 year "mid-life break", Jeff and Cyndie spent two full summers in Alaska and have since returned to Alaska several more times for self-outfitted adventures in the Great Land. Alaska On Your Own is the story of our midlife break to Alaska. The program is a PowerPoint based slide show built from the thousands of photos we took during our adventure. It features 6 Alaska rivers that can be fished on a self-outfitted basis, either from the road system or as fly-out wilderness trips. If you're thinking of planning a trip to Alaska, the program will provide you with valuable information. If you're still dreaming of making the trip someday, the program will provide with inspiration. Some of Jeff and Cyndie Schmitt's slides on Western Rivers and Alaska can be viewed at www.justtakinabreak.com. April 2004 SPECIAL EVENTApril's gathering will be a dinner meeting held in conjunction with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History Trout Club. The speaker will be Prof. Robert Behnke. Widely recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on salmonids, Prof. Behnke has written more than 100 articles and papers on fish and fisheries, as well as several books. The cost for this special event will be about $30. April 30, 2004 CLUB OUTINGA special Chapter outing is planned to Oil Creek in Northwestern, PA. Details available in attached flyer

Monday, October, xx, 2003Our first Chapter meeting for the 2003-2004 season was held at Pine Lake Trout Club. Numerous members spent the afternoon fishing followed by dinner and a Chapter meeting. The day was a bit rainy, but most members still were able to catch fish. Monday, September 29, 2003Doug Lamb hosted our Chapter at Sunnybrook Trout Club where Chapter members had approximately 1.5 miles of Spring Creek fishing to themselves. Doug graciously offered to donate the money raised to the Chapter coffers. Weekend of March 28-30, 2003The Chapter outing this month will be held at the Mohican State Park, along the Clearfork River. We have reserved 6 non-smoking cabins (about 24 people) but there's room for more in the Lodge. Tuesday, March 11th, 2003Mr. Rich Cochran, executive director of the Chagrin River Land Conservancy, will speak on the upcoming Sulphur Springs project. The meeting will begin at 7PM and will be held at the CAC. Friday, March 1, 2003Take note: today is the "likely" deadline for the ODNR to have received your postcard for admission to the Trout Fishing Lottery held at Castalia each year. 100 lucky anglers will have the opportunity to enjoy a half-day of exclusive use of this very interesting spring creek. Trust me, they do rise to a well presented fly, even mid-day in late July! Tuesday, February 11th, 2003The February meeting will be held at the CAC at 7:00PM. Mr. Tony DalPra will speak about the trout angling opportunities available at the nearby Clearfork River. Please join us for an interesting discussion. The chapter will have the opportunity to fish the Clearfork over the last weekend in March. Tuesday, January 14th, 2003The next meeting of the season will be held at the CAC at 7:00PM. Our speaker will be Andy Burt, a fisheries Biologist from the ODNR Division of Wildlife, District 3 Office. Andy will present the status and future plans of the Wild Brook Trout re-introduction program in the Chagrin River Watershed.
The Chapter will also address four other issues of broad interest: the formation of a conservation committee, the possibility of a March weekend outing at Clearfork, an offer from the Wolf Creek Trout Club for Chapter members (fishing access), and finally an offer to purchase trout-related fine-art prints for the membership. For more information, contact Chris Steffen. 2001 - 2002 Season Tuesday, February 12th, 2002The next meeting was held at the CAC at 7:00PM. Andy Vidra, Senior Environmental Planner, NOACA, spoke about "Protecting the N.E. Ohio Watershed." 2001 Weekend, November 9-11thThe Cleveland Museum of Natural History Trout Club sponsored the "Fly Tying and Steelhead Summit II: A Celebration of Fish and Fly" This three-day program celebrated the successful development of a world-class steelhead fishery in the Great Lakes region and the evolution of flies and techniques to catch these fish. It offered an impressive collection of presentation-grade fly tiers, and a cast of anglers widely recognized for their expertise in catching Great Lakes steelhead. The weekend featured local talents (Mike Bennett, Jerry Darkes, Ara Hamamjian) and national figures (Wayne Luallen, Mike Martinek, Jr., Marvin Nolte, Jerry Kustich, Rick Kustich, Charlie Chute and more).
The Annual Conservation Banquet is our major fundraising activity for the Chapter. The event was held downtown at the CAC. Saturday, October 20th The Chapter toured the Fish Hatchery in Castalia, Ohio. Although no one fished the nearby spring creek (Cold Creek), we were able to glimpse the holding facilities for Steelhead and Springbrook Brook Trout. The Emerald Necklace Chapter helped defray the cost of some additional training for the hatchery staff. We hope this cooperative arrangement will serve to improve the quality of trout fishing opportunities in Ohio. Tuesday, September 25th
