Trout Unlimited, Emerald Necklace Chapter, Cleveland, Ohio

For 50 years, Trout Unlimited (TU) has been America's leading trout and salmon conservation organization dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Whether they are planning and building stream improvement projects, working with government to secure fish-friendly legislation, or teaching young people the importance of protecting wild fish and their habitat, TU members are actively engaged in the fight to preserve our precious trout and salmon resources.

Boy Scout Outings at Castalia

We had 3 Scout Troops signed up this summer to work on their Fly Fishing Merit Badge.  Troop 115 and 435 from Lakewood and Troop 225 from Westlake.  All 3 Troops got to fly fish at ODNR Castalia Hatchery's section of Cold Creek:

I received an overwhelming response for my request for volunteers.  We had 10 instructors ready to work with the boys when we meet with the Troops individually this summer.  We also had another 4 or 5 volunteers waiting in the wings to fill in.

The merit badge has 10 required tasks.  The boys work on 2 of the tasks independently, and another 2 tasks (casting and catching 2 types of fish) will be taught at the Castalia outing.  That left us with 6 remaining tasks to be taught at the Troop's regular meeting nights.

We divided the remaining 6 tasks between the instructors.  Each instructor is responsible for 1 task. The boys went through a round robin type event and visited various tables to receive the instruction.  Since we had such an overwhelming response for volunteers we had assigned 2 volunteers per task.  We met with each Troop 2 times in the evening before their scheduled outing at Castalia.

If you would be interested in volunteering for future events please consider contacting Wes Perusek our Education Chairman.

Special Thanks to:

Doug Lamb and the Sunnybrook Trout Club.  I would like to express our gratitude to Doug and Sunnybrook for the generous $500 donation to our Chapter.  Doug's donation was used to off-set our expenses for the Boy Scout classes.  Please visit Doug's website at www.sunnybrooktroutclub.com

The Emerald Necklace Chapter is located in North-Eastern Ohio. We meet regularly throughout the Fall, Winter, and Spring. Our corner of Ohio is home to two very different trout fisheries-the Lake Erie Steelhead and the native Ohio Brook Trout.  The former represents an exciting opportunity to catch huge lake-run rainbows throughout most of the year; the latter represents a serious conservation challenge within the Chagrin River watershed. To learn more about our Chapter's activities, please follow the links along the top of this page.

There are no additional chapter dues or costs to attend our meetings.  Our chapter funds are generated through our Conservation Banquets and other fund raisers events.
